Paradox

Paradox is a relational database management software launched and published by the Corel Corporation. Initially designed by the Ansa-Software, in September 1987 it was taken in by Borland. This included the Paradox relational database management system supporting the DOS 2.0 version.

There were classic and efficient versions of the Paradox/DOS, such as the 3.5 and 4.5 versions. Borland designed and released the Windows version of the software in 1992. The versions 4.0 to 4.5 were redesigned in the Borland Windows supporting C++ using another kind of advanced extended memory accessing mode.

When Paradox for DOS made it's way for the prospective position in the market, the other database management systems like dBase, FoxPro, dbXL and Clipper Programming Language dominated the field. There were also other imminent competitors like Clarion, DataEase, Rbase, Dataflex, etc. The Paradox relational database management system made a different impact due to the features it exhibited in it's data computational and management programs. These distinguishing features, advantageous from the user's point of view, are as follows:

  • a visual implementation known to be Query By Example
  • effective memory usage characterized by data tables and indexes
  • text menus and windows as in Lotus being user friendly and less cumbersome
  • a new readable and powerful programming language called PAL, or, the Paradox Application Language that can be recorded from basic keyboard actions
The Paradox 1.0 and 2.0 versions offered illustrated and easily understandable manuals and read outs that won the readability awards.

The Paradox system implemented for the Windows platform had all the important advantages and key features as in the DOS supported versions along with QBE, database engine having ports going by the DOS code encrypted in the ObjectPAL language mode. In the Paradox Windows versions of the relational database management system the Hypercard was used instead of the keystroke recording system. In the newer database management softwares the Paradox database system introduced novel command modes like the mouse right click to access forms and report property files. The developments were such made initially in the Paradox relational database management softwares that the object oriented codes were written in the C programming language. After the Turbo C++ was available the encryption was encouraged under the C++ support.

Both the projects that commenced together were Paradox and Quattro Pro, both supporting the Windows platform. Both the endeavors used the beta versions of Windows 3.0 and major developments followed till Microsoft was sold for just a part of the net price for Paradox/Windows along with it's applications of Word, Excel and Powerpoint in the Microsoft Office Professional counterpart.

Corel Corporation in the 1990s' gained rights to design, alter and modify along with the stand to sell the products of Paradox software in the present market. It released the excellent workable version of the relational database management software called the Corel Paradox 8 in 1997. Ever since the advent of Corel in launching and upholding these database management softwares, a large community of Paradox software users has developed having forums, community outlets and newsletters. The recent Paradox software and other finished products also boast of Paradox Converters proficient in converting the tables, database and related work files to other usable formats.
