MaxDB |
The MaxDB is an ANSI SQL-92 used as a database management system taken from the SAP AG, which was delivered also by MySQL AB from 2003 to 2007. The MaxDB is used as large SAP environments. It is also used for different other applications where the enterprise leveled database is highly required. This management system is able to run as terabyte-range data in continuous operation
The idea of developing the databases started in the year 1977 it was used as a research project at the technical university of Berlin. During the 1980s the MaxDB was started to be used as a database product which can subsequently owned by Nixdorf Computer, Siemens-Nixdorf, Software AG and at present by the SAP AG. It has also been variously named as VDN, Reflex, Supra 2, DDB/4, Entire SQL-DB-Server and ADABAS. In the year 1997 SAP took over the software from the soft and gave it a new name as SAP DB. SAP DB since October 2000 released many additional sources as open source used under the GNU General Public License. In 2003 SAP AG and MySQL AB joined a partnership and re-branded the database system to MaxDB.
Recently in October 2007 the reselling of MaxDB was terminated and was provided with the sales and support of the database reverted back to SAP. The company which has taken over the modern SAP is now controlling the entire project in many ways such as development, distribution, and support. The MaxDB is no longer under the GNU the abbreviation of General Public License. The SAP also declared that "Further commercial support concepts to cover mission critical use requirements outside of SAP circumstances are currently focus on the discussion. The version 7.5 MaxDB is a detailed advancement of the SAP DB 7.4 code base. Therefore it is used as a software version as 7.5 which can also be used as a direct upgrade of previous SAP DB versions starting 7.2.04 or even higher than that.
The MaxDB is provided with different administration and development tools out of these tools many are GUI based and have CLI (Command Line Interface) based counterparts. the new software system provides offers bindings for the for JDBC; ODBC; SQLDBC, ADO, DAO, Precompiler; PHP; Perl; Python; WebDAV; OLE DB, NET and RDO through the ODBC; Delphi and TCL via Third Party Programming Interfaces.
The MaxDB is famous for offering built-in hot backup. It also does not require any online reorganizations and claims for the SQL 92 Entry-Level compatible. One recently modified goal of MaxDB is "zero administration" and by this "low TCO". It is also good to expect some online transaction processing performance along with the relatively low hardware requirements. Another important feature of MaxDB is availability mode and also small fault record which is an important traditionally observed feature.
