Informix

Informix, the relational database software is the ultimate prize of the efforts made by Roger Sippl and Laura King who were working at a software company called Cromemco. They produced a relational database system, which was based on the techniques in the Indexed Sequential Access method, or, ISAM.

The key feature found in ISAM is that the data can be organized into recorded versions of fixed length. This being a departure from the conventional system of navigational database was utilized by Sippl and King to design Informix software. The Informix database system being the ultimate answer to all the problems faced in relational database management and computation are now in frequent use by the software companies world wide.

The first Informix product was the Marathon, released on the Onyx Operating System. It was a 16 bit operating version of ISAM, working by the guidelines of Unix for the ZiLOG microprocessors used at that point of time. In the early 1980s' Unix remained a small scale using tool, but soon the popularity of Unix and SQL grew to implement their once cherished novel objectives in software technology. Soon after this in 1988 enough development was there to be seen in the SQL and the SQL variants of ACE and PERFORM, for company to get established in the software field.

The first products launched by the IBM Informix software company were the Informix SQL Version 2.00 and the Informix-4GL 1.00. They included both database engines and development tools catering to the relational database programmers and also to the non programmers worldwide. Soon after a series of releases followed that worked in perfect coordination with the user's needs due to the powerful Informix dynamic server. The most significant of these later releases was the Informix-Turbo, having multiuser support unlike the other ISAM working platforms.

Informix purchased the Innovative Software, another software company that was running low in the business in 1988. They were the designers of DOS and Unix dependent working platforms for SmartWare, WingZ and Apple Macintosh. In 1994, Informix collaborated with the Sequent Computer Systems, soon acquiring enough in it's research and developmental repertoire to release the recent version of the Informix dynamic server.

The database server supported due to the recent advances of the company features a new technology known as Dynamic Scalable Architecture, or, DSA. The system of DSA supports both horizontal and vertical parallelism in the field of relational database management. The DSA by Informix is based on multi-threaded core supporting symmetric multi-processing and is currently doing business with imminent vendors like, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett Packard and a host of others.

In the recent times Informix is into the development and design of the recent version of the database software supporting the Informix dynamic server. After IBM's take over of the Informix, suggestions were given to reorganize and reinforce the system in order to get more efficiently planned work outputs. It's products became more and more user friendly as shown by the inclusion of easy Informix tutorials and user manuals in all of it's finished products.
