The DB2 is one major software product created as a relational database management system software product within IBM's broader Information Management Software line. There are different editions and versions of IBM DB2 all these operate on devices that range from handhelds to mainframes. IBM DB2 also refers to DB2 Enterprise Server Edition or the top-of-the-line DB2 Data Warehouse Edition.
The DB2 is available in many different editions and also by licensing arrangements. IBM provides the customers scope of avoiding paying for database products which they do not require. The company also makes some sample editions including the Express, workgroup, and Enterprise Edition. The most sophisticated edition for linux/UNIX/Windows is DB2 Data Warehouse Enterprise Edition, or DB2 DWE. Such editions are made for mixed workloads. Beginning with the Version 8, IBM brought DB2 for z/OS and for the other platforms into much closer alignment.
In the year 2006 and on 30th January the IBM released one no charge version of DB2 which is called as DB2 Express. This release of version was an expected response to the recently announced free versions of Oracle 10g and Microsoft SQL Server.
The most important position in the database management software market was recently held by the Oracle. IBM and DB2 are regularly positioned at or near the top of the TPC-C and TPC-H industry benchmarks published on the Transaction Processing Performance Council's website.
The DB2 software product can be administered either through the command line or a GUI. DB2 provides APIS for many programming languages including NET CLI, Java, Python, Perl, PHP, Ruby, C++, C, REXX, PL/I, COBOL, RPG, FORTRAN, and many other programming also.
