Apache Derby

The Apache Derby is a database management system made for the Java relational programs. It is the program which can be embedded in the Java programs and those which are used for the online transaction processing. The derby system also has a 2 MB disk-space footprint. This software is developed as an open source project applied under the Apache 2.0 licence. The Derby was previously distributed as IBM Cloudscape and Sun Java DB.

The Derby provided database engine system is the core of the technology it is a full functioned relational attached database engine. JDBC and SQL are the programming APIs. The derby network server is used for increasing the reach of the derby database engine by providing opportunities especially meant for the clients. The Derby Network Server is used for increasing the reach of the derby database engine by providing traditional client server functionality. The network server allows the Derby engine to support networked JDBC, ODBC/CLI, Perl and PHP.

The Apache Derby originated in the cloudscape Inc which is foundation that started in 1996 in Oakland in California. This was created for the Java database technology. The database engine was first released with the name called JBMS in the year 1997. Soon after 1997 the product was renamed as Cloudscape and releases were made about every six months. In the year 2001 the IBM acquired the database assets of Informix Software that also included the Cloudscape. The database engine was again designed to IBM Cloudscape and releases continued, with main focus on embedded use with IBM's Java products and middleware.

In the year 2004 August IBM contributed the code of the Apache Software Foundation with the incubator project sponsored by the Apache DB project. In the month of July 2005 the Derby project completed the Apache incubator and is now being developed as a sub-project of the DB Top Level Project at Apache. Before the graduation of the Derby project from incubation, the Sun also organized the Derby project with an intention of using the Derby as a component in their products. This happened with the release of the Java 6 in December 2006. Recently in the year 2007 in the month of March the IBM announced that they will withdraw the marketing and support for the Cloudscape product, but would carry on the project for contributing the Apache Derby project.

The Apache Derby is an open source relational database which is entirely implemented in Java. This is available under the Apache License, Version 2.0. The derby has a small footprint of about 2 megabytes used for the base engine and attached in the JDBC driver. It is easy to install, deploy and use the Apache Derby.
